Three Main Reasons for Extra Glossy Outer Surfaces of PE Water Supply Pipes
1. Harmless & compliant soft gloss (high-quality virgin PE100 pipe)
The mild, oily and non-dazzling gloss on standard PE pipes comes from pure virgin PE100 material, high-precision polished molds and a small amount of qualified lubricants. These professional additives only optimize extrusion quality, eliminate pockmarks and ensure uniform plasticization. They do not affect pipe toughness, pressure resistance or drinking water safety. This is the standard surface state of qualified new material pipes.
2. Glaring mirror gloss (inferior filled & recycled pipe)
Pipes with extremely bright, mirror-like surface are mostly low-cost products filled with a large proportion of calcium carbonate or talc powder. Manufacturers use fillers and fluorescent brighteners to cover defects of recycled materials. Such pipes have poor toughness, low pressure resistance and unstable welding performance. They sink in water, shed white powder when scratched, and cannot reach the 50-year service life standard, bringing hidden leakage and water safety risks.
3. Abnormal bright surface (process & equipment defective pipe)
Partial or over-bright surface can also be caused by unstable production parameters. Excessive vacuum, over-cooling or over-high die temperature will cause instantaneous super cooling and uneven melt flow. This forms an abnormal glossy layer with water ripples and uneven wall thickness, which belongs to unqualified process defective products.
